Maths Week
Posted August 12, 2022
During Week 3 students across KKPS celebrated New Zealand Maths Week. Students participated in a wide range of activities with junior students having fun with Numicon shapes and the middle and senior school participating in daily problem solving challenges.
Room 6 created a Numicon Seaside Cafe. The children earned their numicon money throughout the Maths session to spend at the Cafe. They ordered off the menu and worked out how much it would cost. The Cafe owner had to work out the difference and hand over the ‘change’. The chef put the order together by matching the numbers to the numicon shapes and away they went!
Room 10 explored Geometry by creating their own tessellations. They looked at what a tessellation is and how the pattern fits together. They created a large fish tessellation together and then were challenged to go and create their own.
Room 3 explored using cuisenaire rods to make their own pictures. They enjoyed being creative and making some excellent pictures to share.
Room 1 and 2 loved Maths Week! They even had a maths based poem for their week (1,2,3,4,5 Once I caught a fish alive). They have been looking at identifying and ordering numbers to 5 with the new students and making 100’s and 1000’s fairy bread and cutting it into halves and quarters was a highlight! Also catching fish and counting how many they caught.
Room 26 and 27 completed a range of maths activities to celebrate the week and made maths FUN! Between a team problem solving challenge, Maths Kahoot! Maths Photography task, Money Words and Finding the Maths in lollies.
